Cutesy but not Cutesy, Diane Koss

June 1 – August 1, 2012

Opening Reception: Friday, June 1

5 – 9 pm

Diane Koss (Westmont, NJ) of Cutesy but not Cutesy uses sewing and creating as a way to pay homage to her grandmother’s hard work in hand stitching clothing and quilts. It allows Koss time to reflect on the disappearing tradition of the handmade. Her monsters allow her to add a contemporary twist on a long-standing tradition. Each monster is an extension of herself and her creativity. They are adventurous creatures and deserve to be released to all corners of the earth!

Cotton Monster

Cotton Monsters will be invading the Alternatives Museum Shop at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts. Each Cotton Monster is a little (or big) work of art made from recycled clothing and linens without a pattern, so no two will ever be exactly alike.  Jennifer attempts to make each cotton monster as different as possible, carefully picking the materials that go into making each one and intuitively sewing all their parts.  Though much care is taken in making each unique creature sturdy, Cotton Monsters are soft sculptures.

About the Artist

Fiber artist Jennifer Strunge of Cotton Monster (Baltimore, MD) was taught to sew by her mother when she was a child. Her love of textiles grew, and she went on to study at the Maryland Institute College of Art. As a senior, she designed and made quilts with eyes, and soon after, giant soft sculptural creatures. Inspired by the joy her creations brought to viewers, she created her cotton monster line. When she’s not creating her monsters, she can be found with Black Cherry Puppet theatre bringing art and puppetry programs to schools and recreation centers throughout Baltimore.
