The Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, a dynamic non-collecting contemporary art center located on the Riverfront Wilmington in Wilmington, Delaware, seeks a skilled and experienced museum educator and administrator who will lead new and ongoing programmatic and strategic initiatives that meet the DCCA’s evolved mission exploring the intersection of art, technology, and design.

Position Summary

The position reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for leading the learning and engagement initiatives at the DCCA. The Curator of Education works closely with the Curator of Contemporary Art and the Borgenicht Curatorial & Education Associate to guide and implement the Center’s on-site, community outreach, and digital/distance programming, identifying and facilitating new educational opportunities and methodologies in the exploration of contemporary creative practice for audiences of all ages and interests. School and family programs, community-based initiatives, teacher and scholarly symposia and professional development, and standards-based curriculum development relating to the contemporary arts and the creative process are among this position’s most significant tasks. The Curator of Education will work across departments with members of the curatorial, visitor services, marketing, and development departments, to ensure that the needs of all constituents are considered, identified, and met.

Position Responsibilities

The functions and responsibilities listed below are those that represent the majority of time spent working in this job. Management may assign additional essential functions and responsibilities related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

  • Work with Executive Director, DCCA Board Education Committee, and Curator to refine and evaluate existing educational programs, as well as develop new programs that reflect the DCCA’s new mission highlighting the intersection of art, design and technology, and are up to date with or lead national models for museum education practice.
  • Work with Executive Director and Education Committee to broaden the impact of DCCA educational programming throughout the state of Delaware into Kent and Sussex Counties, including taking lead in identifying and cultivating new collaborative partners throughout the State and within the Department of Education.
  • Facilitate a variety of programs, including but not limited to, Contemporary Connections, Creative Arts Club, AIR programs, family classes, camps, school group visits, drop-in programs, festivals, and offsite programming.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with schools, teachers, parents and students.
  • Prepare, order, organize and maintain educational materials and classroom.
  • Develop and manage all calls for teaching artists and artists in residence for any education program or initiative.
  • Work directly with Director of Marketing to develop and implement marketing plans for DCCA educational programs, both on-site and within the community.
  • Work with Director of Development in the research, planning, and writing of all grants in support of DCCA education programs and initiatives. Supply Director of Development with necessary materials for all interim and final reports due to funders.
  • Manage annual Education Department budget, as well as individual program budgets, including all necessary tracking of expenses for grant reports.
  • Secure all necessary training and background checks for artists/educators contracted by DCCA for educational programs.
  • Ensure education events calendar is current and accurate.
  • Coordinate with DCCA staff on a regular basis needs for upcoming DCCA education programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibility and requirements of the position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong ability to identify key community and education stakeholders, and build collaborations across a diverse set of possible partners to strengthen outcomes for the DCCA’s Education Department.
  • Knowledge of state and national arts education standards and best practices.
  • Knowledge of contemporary art and visual culture.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Ability to manage large projects and must be able to prioritize and delegate work as needed.
  • Must understand the building and management of budgets, and routinely report accurate financial data to the Executive Director and other management as needed.
  • Must communicate effectively with all levels of management and staff.
  • Maintain high standards of professional etiquette.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team of dedicated professionals.
  • Ability to think creatively.
  • Ability to multitask.

Required Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in education, art, art history, or related field, or related experience.
  • Three or more years of arts education experience is preferred.
  • Evidence of past innovative educational and/or community outreach programming.
  • Demonstrated evidence of clear writing

The position reports directly to the Executive Director and is a full-time salaried position that is eligible for the DCCA’s benefit package. Salary offered is commensurate with experience.

A Part-Time Security Guard is needed for weekend and evening hours at the DCCA. The hours would include working Saturdays 10am - 5pm, and/or Sundays 12pm - 5pm, and evening coverage during special events (such as First Friday Art on the Town evenings). Part-time guards at the DCCA are many times artists still in school or recently graduated, who want to remain involved in the art-related field. Additional security and CPR experience is a plus. 


The Part-Time Security Guard is to ensure a positive, safe and secure environment for the entire facility. This includes the public viewing contemporary art in the galleries, the studio artists in the facilities, and the office area for the staff. The Security Guard is responsible for the overall well-being of the artwork, public safety, building safety, and employee safety at all times while on duty.

The DCCA seeks DCCA Teaching Artist Positions for various programs. Responsibilities vary depending on the program. They include, but are not limited to, curriculum development and implementation, supply purchasing, overseeing volunteers and assistant teachers, set-up and clean up, and maintaining a safe and creative studio environment.
